Collins claims B-Mod Summertime Shootout; Tillison, Morton, Lacy nab wins

From thrills and spills to great side-by-side racing, fans who attended K&N Night at the Races had plenty to talk about following the seventh NASCAR Whelen All-American Series points race of the season. While the B-Mods headlined the program with the Summertime Shootout presented by ARMI Contractors, all four divisions contributed to the spectacle of racing action that will not be soon forgotten.

A dense morning shower and humid weather conditions late in the week made it difficult for track preparation crews to spend much time on the surface of the Salina Highbanks Speedway by race day. However, the most was made out of the situation at hand. After completing the heat races and B-Features a tall, treacherous cushion had built around the topside of the speedway forcing officials to take a pause in the program to re-work the racetrack in order to provide a competitive racing surface for the A-Features.

When racing resumed following the midway farming session, the Pure Stocks took to a freshly groomed Salina Highbanks Speedway that held traction from top to bottom. From the drop of the green flag to the checkered fans witnessed three, four, and occasional five-wide racing that made even the most cold-blooded cringe. By lap four, Brennon Lacy had sliced his way through the chaos to take the lead. A few laps later the field was stopped for a violent wreck at the entrance of turn three that sent Matt Thulin for a hard tumble. Thulin walked away unscathed and the field returned to action. The stoppage did not phase Lacy as he picked up right where he left off, blistering the field en route to his fourth win of the season. Brett Testerman followed Lacy across the line to finish second, Nathan Campbell who brought out a caution on lap three recovered for a podium finish ahead of Justin Walters and Roger Starling who rounded out the top five finishers.

JC Morton has been no stranger to victory lane across the Midwest for several years behind the wheel of a B-Mod. That success seemed to translate to the Super Stock this week when Morton made his second start of the season in one of the toughest full-bodied divisions in the region. After a rough go of it last week the ship was quickly righted and Morton was unstoppable once the field took the green flag. The Springfield, Missouri native wired the field to pick up his first win of the season, also his first ever A-Feature win at Salina Highbanks Speedway. Dale Richardson powered by Brian Parker on lap four and followed Morton the rest of the distance to finish second, while Parker held on to third. Kyle Davis caught fire entering turns three and four on the final lap but still crossed the line in fourth before getting to safety in the infield off the backstretch following the race. Darin Rigney made his 2017 debut and the 2014 track champion picked up a top five finish from the tenth starting spot.

For the greater part of nineteen laps the result of the Modified A-Feature seemed to be an inevitable Brian Williams victory, but by the time the white flag waved, all bets were off. Williams set his car along the cushion at the entry of turn one to hit his marks just like he had done all race long, but this time he would not be alone on exit of turn two. Thomas Tillison, Jr. dropped to the hub of the speedway on entry of turn one to attempt a slide job, and things narrowed up quickly when the leaders came off of turn two. Tillison made contact with Williams as he worked by the race-long leader. Williams slid up into the wall after the contact but kept his Hughes Racing Chassis powered up to take a stab down to the inside of turns three and four after Tillison had wrestled the preferred top groove away. The last-ditch effort was all for show as Tillison held on over Williams. Johnny Bone, Jr. recorded a third-place finish after starting on the outside pole. Brett Hansen was able to use lapped traffic to his advantage in the race for fourth slipping by Steve Holzkamper with four laps to go. Tillison’s win was his fourth of the season, and was enough to put him tied for the points lead with Al Purkey.

The B-Mod Summertime Shootout presented by ARMI Contractors headlined the evening’s program with a 20-lap $800 to win, $100 to start A-Feature. Matt Collins simply would not be denied his first ever victory at Salina Highbanks Speedway as he blasted out early from the pole and led all 20 laps to score the win. Carl Conley passed Kevin Guinn for second on lap three, but never had enough in the tank to challenge Collins, and the Porter, Oklahoma veteran settled in for a runner-up finish. Jeran Frailey was the biggest mover of the night, driving from twelfth to third to earn the Out-Pace Racing Products Hard Charger Award. Kevin Guinn slipped to fourth after starting on the outside front row and Kenton Allen finished fifth. Additional awards included Paul Dilbeck who won the Lucky Non-Qualifier draw worth $250, Brian Williams made his first B-Mod start of the season and got the better off all other newcomers finishing ninth to pocket $250 as the Highest Finishing New Driver, while Chris Hawkins walked away with another aluminum jack by winning the Pit Crew Challenge.

Our next event is this Saturday, June 24th featuring the Oil Capital Racing Series Sprint Cars and the AmeriFlex Hose & Accessories Modified Summertime Shootout presented by United Sports & Autos. For additional details visit www.salinahighbanksspeedway.com or call 918-434-RACE.
